DIY Workshop: Rainwater Harvesting for Sustainable Water Futures

Learn how to make the most of the rain in this fun and hands-on 2 day workshop that takes place near a rain forest in Western Ghats !
Serious drought in various parts of the country demands that we develop plans for sustainable water futures. There is a saying that water is the gold of this century. It is the key source of life and human habitation. In this workshop; we will learn to be eco-warriors and conserve water for our future.
Date :  27 & 28 th July 2019.
Location:
The location of the workshop is in a Forest resort in awe-inspiring Kodachadri in Western Ghats which currently receives amongst the highest rainfall in India yet suffered a severe drought this summer. You will have some time to explore the trails and treks in the forest.
DIY Workshop:
In this hands-on workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of active and passive rainwater harvesting systems. By the end of the workshop we will have 1) Developed a concept plan for rain water management for a site with complex topography 2) installed a rainwater harvesting tank, 3) built a swale to catch the overflow, and 4) redeveloped a garden into a rain garden to catch and safely redirect thousands of litters from the to grow a indigenous garden
Topics to include:
• Overview on rain water harvesting
• Techniques of site assessment and integrated system design of rainwater harvesting earthworks, rain tanks, greywater & Landscape features
• Nature based design to manage water
• Calculating potential rainwater collection
• Hands-on training workshop on installing components of a rain water harvesting tank
• Best water management practices
• Passive Rainwater Harvesting Earthworks & hands on activities to create earthworks and rain gardens.
• Different types of tanks and cisterns

Urban Venture Challenge

Urban Venture Challenge aimed to showcase social innovation products and services that will improve our cities. As part of this agenda, a select group of entrepreneurs working on city transformation start-ups participated in a bootcamp and Pitch Fest. This initiative started with a online ideas contest where we got 115+ applications out of which 12 venture teams were selected to participate in a startup bootcamp with a workshop on applying design thinking/ business model canvas.

UVC was hosted by Urban Venture Labs & IIM- RERI, Bangalore and supported by The Urban Vision, Stanford CDDRL , Asia Initiatives( NYC) .Asia Initiatives has committed 5000 USD to 25,000 USD in grants to the ventures in our challenge which apply the SoCCs Model. IIM’s NSRCEL is offering LaunchPad Program to some of the teams. The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation & Mumbai Angels were on the Jury

The 12 Social Venture Teams presented their ideas to a eminent Jury. Jurors included Dr. Jagan Shah, NIUA ; Abhishek Bhatewara, Mumbai Angels ; Padmanabhan, Asia Initiatives ; Santhosh Ramdoss , Michael Susan Dell Foundation ;Naresh Narasimhan , Founder , NUMA ;Prof.Suresh Bhagavatula, IIM B ; Ravichandar Venkataraman, Civic Evangelist & Philanthropist ; Social Entrepreneur Ashwin Mahesh.

Forum on People Centric Smart Cities :The Barcelona experience on 14th March at 6 pm in Mumbai that we are co-hosted with Indian School of Design & Innovation as well as Lower Parel Innovation District. People-Centric smart cities forum explored strategies to use smart city principles to ensure quality of life , equity & health in our cities.This session highlighted the experience of Barcelona in using ideas of smart cities to improve people’s quality of life. Former Dep. Mayor Antoni Vives & Maria Sisternas, Director of Barcelona Circlies shared the Barcelona Experience.
